A slipped disc, also known as a prolapse or herniated disc, happens when one of the discs in the spine ruptures and the gel-like material in the centre of the disc leaks out into the surrounding tissue.
This can cause immense back pain and the pain may radiate to other parts of the body. A slip disc may happen when you bend awkwardly to try to lift a box from the floor. As we age, the ligaments holding the discs begin to weaken and as the degeneration progresses, movements like twisting can cause the gel-like material to bulge out.
